Kenyan families have the chance to attend the first edition of the Toto Art Challenge organized by the Maha Events Self Group at the Mamba Village in Mombasa.

“The aim of the event is to create awareness about art and nurture it in our children,” says Philip Mae, the chairman of Maha Events Self Group. “We want to show children that art can also be a good career choice and that they should not dismiss it if they are talented.

“For at least the last two decades Art & Craft has been taught and examined in the country’s schools but what is unsettling is the fact that the same is lagging behind in defining itself as a profession that youths can proudly aspire to pursue.”

The challenge, which has been running for the part of the year, has seen different individuals and even groups take part all under the age of 17. “We ran the competition via online, in churches and school around the country,” said Philip.

The winners from the different categories which include; fashion design, weaving, modeling, molding, paper craft and painting will get the chance to showcase at the Pwani Art Exhibition in March, which is the organization’s biggest art event in the country.

“It will be fun and a learning event for children and parents,” says Philip. “And it will show how far the Kenyan art scene has come.”

The event will take place on the on 19th December from 10am up to 6pm.
