Kids-Furniture-5FunKidz, an interior design company, is giving Kenyan parents a chance to spruce up their children’s bedroom with colourful and trendy designs and furniture which turns out can have positive impact on a baby’s health, development and growth.

A research conducted by Studio SK, an interior design consultancy firm, found that the interior design in a baby’s room will have an impact on their brain’s growth in the first 12 months because a young child’s favourite pastime at that age is paying attention to their sensory world.

Providing environmental stimulation such as colour, texture and music will improve a baby’s curiosity, attention span and memory. This allows the child to reach developmental milestones faster and have a more secure self image.

FunKidz focuses on sprucing up bedrooms for month old babies to teenagers. “We do interior designs for the whole bedroom from the walls, roof and even floor,” said Maureen Kinyanjui, the sales and marketing manager of FunKids furniture.

“We usually send an interior designer to the client’s house to have a look at the intended room, then we come up with a design from scratch with the parents or if they have idea in mind we try and implement it with them; be it for a boy, girl or if they want a unisex bedroom.”

Chiiru Waweru, the founder of FunKids furniture and an interior designer by profession, was inspired to start the company in 2010, after she could not find her preferred furniture for her first born baby’s bedroom at any kids’ stores or an interior designer who could spruce up the bedroom to her liking.

Some of the kid’s furniture that they have on offer include; car beds, baby cots, wall clocks, study desks and bunk beds among others

Other than that, they also rent out baby furniture for travelling parents. “There are cars seats, travel baby cots and high chairs among other baby furniture,” said Maureen. “The rental price will depend on the type of furniture one is renting and for how long. For example on a daily basis, it can range from Sh200 to Sh1000.”
