The Kenya Women 4 Cancer foundation will on Sunday, 2nd October, hold a walk in an event dubbed Women 4 Cancer Globeathon Walk in a bid to raise awareness about cancer in the country.

“This is the fourth year that we are hosting this event,” said Rose Chiedo, a Women 4 Cancer member. “And given that October is considered the cancer raising awareness month, we want to continue with the cause and to offer support to women that have beat cancer and those that are currently have the disease.”

The organization holds free medical camps in different areas around the country in which they are working to increase early detection of the disease. In Kenya she said, cervical cancer is the most common case in women. The estimated number of cervical cancer cases annually is nearly 3000 while the death toll is about 1600; this is according to a report released by the Ministry of Health this year.

“The reason for this, is the nature in which it is contracted; it is caused by human papillomavirus, which is a sexually transmitted disease,” said Chiedo. “Once you contract it, the virus can ‘hide’ in the body for eight to ten years before symptoms start showing. This is why regular checkups are encouraged so that it can be detected early and cervical cancer prevented.”

It will take place at Karura forest from 7am and charges for a ticket are Sh1000 for adults. “By buying one ticket, it is paying for a pap smear for a woman who cannot afford it,” she said. “Children tickets are Sh500 and there will be play activities for them after the walk. Plus they get free t-shirts after registering”

One can register at the ground on the day or via M-Pesa. To reach them call: 0717117446.
