Summer cooking classes for kids

Lakuku Kitchen is introducing kids to the world of kitchen this summer holiday, giving them a chance to use their little hands and realize the fun of cooking as they learn how to make various treats including doughnuts, pizzas and smoothies among others.

Starting on the week of August 2nd , the kids summer cooking classes are open to kids aged between 5 and 16 years; and will seem them learn how to make various dishes everyday, from meringues to muffins and smoothies, to pizzas, among others.

This is the first time Lakuku Kitchen, which offers cooking courses for househelps and cooks is running classes for kids. Claire Low, the director of Lakuku, says she decided to do this because the summer holiday is long and there is not enough things for kids to do.

This will also help the kids interact   she adds, and ‘use their little hands and realize that cooking is fun’ as they learn to prepare different things.

Located in Langata, Lakuku Kitchen was started three years ago, and not only offers cooking classes but also trains on kitchen management including on hygiene and cleaning, nutrition,  safety in the kitchen and at home,  buying and storing, manners and presentation ,kitchen technology, time management as well as   serving  and table setting.

For the kids summer classes; each day the kids will learn a different recipe; with Mondays being for making meringues, including piping, shaping and decorating with cream and fruit, as well as learning how to make a delicious lemon cream topping.

Tuesdays will be for chocolate and smoothies, and will have kids making chocolate and  fruit muffins which they will then wash down with two delicious different fruit smoothies.

Wednesdays will be ‘Chocoholics feast’ for  chocolate, marshmellow & biscuit brownies as well as chocolate chip cookies ;while Thursdays will be bread making days; where kids will  learn how to make seeded rolls, sundried tomato herby bread rolls, platting bread and gorgeous jam filled mini doughnuts.

Fridays will be Pizzatastic Fridays; with kids learning how to make a pizza dough, homemade tomato sauce, decorating and eating the pizza; and making easy cheese straws while the pizza cooks.

The week of 16th August will be dedicated to the very little kids between 4 and six years, who unlike the rest, will not be required to read the recipes.

The classes will run from the week of second August till the week of 23rd, starting from 9amto 12noon.Lessons will be conducted in small classes of 6 kids per session for a cost of Sh1000 per person per session; inclusive of recipes to take home.

Early booking is highly recommended; about a week before the week you wish to enroll your child for the classes. Email This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it for bookings or more details; or call Claire Low on 0729-624339.

Find it: baby shoes

Baby shoes help protect babies from sharp objects and support their body weight so they form a correct gait, but good shoes for tinies can be hard to track down. In ‘find it’ this week we list some of the outlets stocking baby shoes.

Find it: helmets

Wearing a helmet during sports, be it when cycling, roller skating or horse riding, helps reduce the risk of head injuries incase of a  collision or a fall; as most of the impact energy will be absorbed by the helmet. Our find it this week lists some of the outlets selling helmets for various sports.

Nairobi’s store for secondhand fancy costumes

Kate’s collections, an open air second hand store for fancy costumes is now giving parents a chance to ensure their kids have fun, great photos and memories during parties; as they dress in their favourite character costumes, now available at the store.

Find it: gas balloons

Balloons are great with kids’ parties not only as decorations, but also as party favours and for party games as well. Gas balloons are a favorite for many because of their buoyancy but quite rare to find; and kenyakidz just discovered where to find them.
