Kenyan families have a chance to celebrate father’s day with some fun and art at Kids and Canvas Father’s day edition at the village market, in Nairobi.

“It is the second edition of the event,” said Rahab King’ori, the founder of the event. “And we wanted to give families something fun that they can do on the day.”

Father’s day which is celebrated every third Sunday of June of every year, is meant to honour parental bonds between a child and their father or any father figure in their life even their mother. This year, the day will be celebrated on June 19th.

The origins of the day are not clear but according to an article titled; ‘when is father's day, what gifts should I buy dad and why do we celebrate the day?’, by the Telegraph online newspaper, it is believed that Sonora Dodd a woman in Washington, US in 1910 came up with the idea after hearing a Mother’s Day sermon and wondering why fathers did not have their own day too.

For Rahab King’ori, however, she was inspired to start the event following the success of another event that she founded called, Wine and Canvas. “Most people who attended the event kept on asking if we had an event that they could also attend with their kids along and have some fun, so we came up with Kids and Canvas event for the whole family.”

The attendees of the event, Kids and Canvas, father’s day edition, will have a chance to learn art through a professional artist, Jesse Magina. “There might be an art theme for the day but we will also let the children decide what they want to draw for their fathers or just for fun.”

The event will take place on Sunday, 19th June at the Village Market, Nairobi from 11am to 3pm. Charges are Sh1000.
