Kids gymnastics is giving Kenya kids a chance to participate in its first ever gymnastics competition in a bid to popularise the sport.
Dubbed ‘Kids Group Gymnastics Competition’, the contest hopes to create awareness about the sport while also evaluating the children.
“This is the first competition held under Kids Gymnastics and what to do is to start an annual evaluation of child gymnasts in Kenya which we hope to even be holding twice per year once it picks up,” said Patrick Owuor, founder of Kids Gymnastics.
The contest will see children from different schools and gymnastics training centres compete in groups while performing various routines.
“Each participating group will perform a four minute routine with accompanying music. The judges will be on the look out for elegant poses and proper execution of basics such as of catwalks, front walks, splits. Technical routines will also be an added value,” said Patrick.
There will be seven teams taking part each with five to ten children per team taking part have trained as gymnasts for around two years. The children are aged between seven and fourteen years.
The participating gymnastics centres are from Lavington, Runda, Academy of Dance and Art, Kayole, Jericho and Rongai.
According to Patrick, the judges will not be so concerned about the uniform but every team will be provided with t-shirts.
Parents, family members and the general public are invited to cheer on the gymnasts on Saturday May 14, 2016 at Kids Gymnastics in Lavington. Children will be charged Sh500 while adults will pay Sh700. There will also be food on sale.
