The much anticipated El-Nino may come with a number of challenges for Kenyan families such as diseases but one problem that may have been overlooked however is how to keep children entertained in the dull weather. Even on a cold, dreary day children can still have plenty of fun. It all boils down to the activities they are engaged. Here are some rainy day remedies to ward off the gloom of the impending El-Nino.

Educational
Learning can be fun and that is what FunKe Science, an online science teaching tool, trys to demonstrate. Apart from teaching children the practicality of science via their website,  FunKe Science also does home visits whereby for one hour children are taught science through simple, fun and engaging live experiments. For a group of thirty children or more one will be charged Sh500 per child. One-on-one personal sessions are also offered but at a higher fee of Sh1500 per child. For more information on FunKe Science, call Tracey Shiundu on 0726 116 976. FunKe Science can also be reached by visiting their website, their Facebook page-FunKe Science, following them on Twitter-@funkescience or checking out their YouTube Channel-FunKe Science.

The puppet shows provided by Project Hand-Up also seek to teach children but in a different manner. Through their shows, the puppeteers aim to eradicate HIV/AIDS by preaching the message of prevention and stigma. The group of puppeteers can stage shows at one's home for a fee of Sh5000. Sporty
Despite the lack of open fields to play in during the rainy weather children can still keep fit. One of these ways is through Kids Gymnastics. The gym located at Lavington mall offers recreational and professional gymnastics. The classes vary depending on the number of sessions. Five sessions go for Sh3000 while ten sessions cost Sh5000. For more information, contact Kids Gymnastics on 0723 390 722, their Facebook page-Kids Gymnastics and Events (Kenya)  or email them on This email address is being protected from spambots. Another way to get children into sports during the rainy weather is through indoor rock climbing. Climb Blue Sky offers just this at Diamond Plaza in Nairobi and Buffalo Mall in Naivasha. The physical and recreational activity gives one a chance to work out their upper and lower body muscles. It also develops skills such as patience, planning and analysis. The charges are Sh 700 per day while shoes can be rented for Sh 300. One can also get 5 day or 10 day passes at Sh 3,200 or Sh 6,200 respectively. Memberships range from 1 month to 1 year at Sh 3,500 to Sh 35,000. For more information call +254 736 236 745/+254 718 569 524 or visit their website.

Fun
It may not be educational or necessarily sporty but Laser Tag Kenya promises to offer children plenty of fun that is sometimes drowned with the rains. The entertainment game generally works by trying to shoot an opponent with a laser toy gun. Played in an indoor arena it is great for the dreary, cold weather. Laser Tag Kenya is also flexible to bring their services to your place of convenience. For more information, call +254 720 851 914, +254 722 398 839, This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. or visit www.lasertag.co.ke

Malls also offer a flurry of activities to keep children engaged in the rainy season so instead of leaving them at home when doing the shopping, why not carry them along. Many malls in Kenya have a cinema so a movie is a great idea for a child. Thika Road Mall (TRM)  for instance even offers a 7D cinema. Children interested in gaming can try out the video games arcade at Sarit Centre. Versilys Play Station Lounge at TRM also offers gamers a chance to play for as little as Sh50 for 15 minutes. Beezy Bees at Yaya Centre offers daycare facilities for younger kids while also engaging their creativity through arts and crafts. Kids Corner, a play centre at Westgate Mall provides children with various facilities to fuel their fun. Some of these are a sunflower swing, a helicopter ride, magic shows among many others.
