Kenya kids seek to break world's 'read aloud' record0 out of 50 based on 0 voters.


A reading campaign is giving Kenya kids a chance to break a world record for having the most people read from the same book at the same time.

Dubbed the Storymoja National Read Aloud, the reading revolution crusade aims to beat the current world record held by USA standing at a figure of 233, 000 people. It is part of 'Start A Library', an initiative of the East African publishing house-Storymoja.

Taking place for 30 minutes, the largest gathering of children come together to read an excerpt a book commissioned by the  Kenya Human Rights Commission called 'Attack of the Shidas'.

Having run four 'Read Aloud' events, Start A Library hopes to Beat the previous national record which stands at at 142,279 children reading aloud in 360 schools across 6 counties and are even eyeing the Guiness World Record.

'Start A Library' is calling on the public to help out through various ways. One is by volunteering to participate in the 'Read Aloud' event by filling an on line registration form.

This volunteering will see one read aloud with the children from the participating schools therefore “encouraging children to view reading as an important pillar of life-long education,” states Storymoja.

Volunteers are also being encouraged to engage the children in discussing the key messages of the exercept after the reading.

Other ways one can get involved is by visiting schools and encouraging them to participate by registering on line or donating the book 'Attack of the Shidas' to participating schools at a cost Sh.350

The 'Read Aloud' shall take place on 30th January from 9am in all participating schools. Donations for 'Attack of the Shidas' can be made via M-Pesa by using Storymoja buy goods number 779741.
