A children's health company is offering Kenya kids a chance to eat tasty nutritious food through their well crafted and thought out menus and recipes.
Dubbed Kids Health & Nutrition, the company not only comes up with healthy menus and recipes but also shows parents how to prepare these tasty meals as well as offering nutrition assessments.
Started late last year, the company aims to provide a healthy alternative to infant and children's food that is still tasty.
“Whenever people think of 'healthy' they attatch a negative connotation to it and we would like to change that perception,” remarked Clare Kariuki who is one of the founding members of Kids Health & Nutrition.
Clare first came up with the idea the then passed it to on to her father who is a paeditrician, a chef and a nutritionist.All were interested in the idea and got on board.
“Our paeditrician, Dr. Mbuthia gives insight on any health related issues,” said Clare.
She goes on to add that the chef who works at one of the major hotels is tasked with “spicing up the ingredients”.
As for the nutritionist, they do evaluations on adults during the company's bi-monthly masterclasses.
Targeting babies who are just off weaning to teenagers, Kids Health & Nutrition has a number of ways which they plan to use to spread the gospel of healthy eating.
One of the main ways they do this is through a bi-monthly masterclass called Tots & Treats whereby they teach parents how to make tasty, healthy food.
“The classes are held in a very open-dialogue manner so as to make everyone comfortable,” remarks Clare.
Parents can come with their children and are taught how to make nutritious tasty food which uses natural substitutes to make food healthier.
“For instance, we usually make apple sauce and use it as a substitute to sugar. Mango porridge has also proved to be quite a favourite,” said Clare. Other popular foods have included cupcakes made of banana, courgettes, peanuts or apricots.
The Tots & Treats master classes also provide health education classes which aim to provide information on various lifestyle diseases and how to deal with them.
“These days you will find that children have many allergies like gluten issues or others who are lactose intolerant,” remarks Clare.
Clare and her team hope to expand the services of Kids Health & Nutrition to other parts of the country.
“We would like to reach out to other communities outside of Nairobi and re-introduce traditional foods to them by re-packaging it in a modern way,” said one of the founders.
According to Clare, many Kenyans today have very good ingredients but they just do not know how to use them.
The next Tots & Treats class will be held on Saturday April 18 at 5th Nogong Avenue office suites on the seventh floor from noon to 2pm.
