knitting-handsKenyan families have the chance to prevent arthritis while bonding in a refreshing way while engaging in an old fashion activity, knitting.

“Knitting is also a good work out for one’s fingers, hands and forearms,” said Alton Barron, M.D, in his 2012 book; The Creativity Cure: Building Happiness With Your Own Two Hands.  “Moving the joints of the fingers, forces fluid to move in and out of the surrounding sponge-like cartilage keeping the joints well-hydrated and minimizing the risk of arthritis. If you let a joint sit, not only will it get stiff, but the actual cartilage will lose its structural integrity and break down.”

Ory Olindo, the founder of the class and head instructor, has a love for knitting which is the inspiration that is driving her to start the classes. “It is quite refreshing to be able to make something to your own specification, and I'd like to pass that on to those who are interested. 

“As much as knitting is thought to be old fashioned or only for grandmothers, it is a skill that when learnt makes it possible to create exactly what you want in the shape, design and colours that you want.”

Knitting is also a way of easing stress, increasing happiness and protecting the brain from damage caused by aging.

A 2007 review paper by occupational therapists Sharon Gutman and Victoria Schindler titled The neurological basis of occupation surveyed the scientific literature that analyzes the neurological basis for how hobbies and activities relate to health and well-being. They found that engaging in such activities like knitting, stimulate the mind, reduce the effects of stress-related diseases and slows cognitive decline. 

For Ory’s classes, she will be teaching basic knitting stitches that she says give one the foundation to read and even make their own patterns.“Knitting is a bit like music; once you know the basic stitches, you can build on that. My students will be required to knit during each class; it is through practice that you learn. They will be required to produce an item that can be worn, but what exactly, will be on an individual basis.”

The classes will have a minimum of three and a maximum of eight people and each will be two and a half hours per week and are aimed at anyone who wants to learn, or refresh their knitting skills. They are for anyone interested be it; man, woman or child

“At the moment the location of the classes is flexible,” she says, “we will come as close and convenient as possible to you, if you have a ready group, we come to you.”
