Kenyan parents looking to enroll their children into an educative day care program as they go back to work from the holidays have the option of Deecee Little Jewels, a play park, crèche and kindergarten for kids aged 6 months and above locates in Lavington, Nairobi.
“We are more than just a day care centre, we offer children more than just a fun day,” said Zipporah Njeri, a teacher at the centre.
“At the crèche we prepare kids to join kindergarten. We engage them in activities such as painting and colouring so that we can help develop their writing grasp and build their hand muscles.”
Indeed, according to an article by online campus Penn State Extension titled; Art -An Opportunity to Develop Children's Skills, engaging young children in such activities helps develop their motor skills for the future.
“As children use scissors to cut, fingers to paint or weave yarn, they are improving control of the small muscles in their hands. Along with drawing with crayons or markers, this helps them develop fine motor control that they need later for writing.”
At the kindergarten level, the centre has incorporated both the 844 and Montessori educational system. For the 844 system, they teach language, number work, social studies and Kiswahili among others. In the Montessori system, children are taught practical work, language and number work among others.
“Depending on the education system that parents would like their children to pursue when they enroll in primary school that is the class that they will join. When the kids graduate, we can even write a recommendation letter for them,” she said.
For the play park the children are completely restricted from learning and encouraged to socialize with their peers in outdoor activities such as bouncy castles, slides, swings and ball games.
The classes start at 7am-1pm for the half day program and 7am-5pm for the full day program.
The centre advises parents to pack for their children enough snacks and food.
Charges depend on the program and classes the parents prefer for their child.
