Kenyan women and children can enroll for self defence classes at the Jaffery Sports Club, where the instructor, Yuly will teach them how to protect themselves from attacks on the streets.
“Unlike other forms of martial arts such as Taekwondo or Karate, Krav Maga is a form of combat that is specifically meant to help one defend or rather protect themselves from street attacks such as robbery, violence and sexual assault,” said Yuly. “It also involves some aspects of Japanese martial arts traditions.”
Indeed, the Krav Maga is an Israel’s national martial art that involves aspects of Jiu Jitsu grappling and ground fighting, Karate kicks and knees, and traditional boxing punches according to online learning platform, Udemy.
“The Krav Maga, is a defense martial art that is aimed to counter attack and protect one from attack, while simultaneously incapacitating the attacker. It also focuses on attacking weak areas of the body, namely the eyes, groin, and throat,” said the platform.
Besides learning how to defend oneself, self defence classes can also help build one’s confidence mentally and instill self-discipline in them. “Krav Maga involves high self discipline, a trait that if one masters, they will be able to implement it in their work and personal life,” said Yuly.
Mr Yuly teaches children eight years and above. In the kids’ classes, he focuses on training them how to stop attacks while for the adult classes, he teaches them how to defend themselves.
The classes are approximately one hour long. At the Jaffery Sports Club the classes start at 7.30 pm on Tuesday.
Charges range from Sh1600.
