The research conducted by Nielsen in the US last year found that 37 per cent of people had made a resolution of staying fit and healthy, which was the top one followed by losing weight at 32 per cent. 43 per cent of the respondents said they planned on achieving this by making healthier eating food choices and this is where Healthy We, come in.

“We deliver vegetables and fruits to our clients,” said Maryann Nkatha, one of the founders of the company. “We realized that most Kenyans especially young and working ones find it a chore to shop for their own groceries and instead opt for other easier solutions like eating out or junk foods so we thought we could offer them a solution by doing their grocery shopping and help them eat healthy.”

Not only are vegetables and fruits good for managing weight, they also can lower blood pressure, reduce risk of heart disease and stroke, prevent some types of cancer, lower risk of eye and digestive problems and keep one’s appetite in check as a research by the Harvard School of Public Health found out.

The company which was started last year September, delivers only fruits and vegetables, which they get straight from the source; farmers, and sell them in kilograms. For example a Kilogram of kale goes for Sh120.

“The customers call us to make their order the day before, we give them a menu of the items available, they give us a list of the items they would like us to purchase for them, which will be delivered to them the next day,” said Nkatha. “The reason one has to order a day prior is because we want to deliver to them fresh items as vegetables and fruits are easily perishable.”

They charge Sh250 for deliveries outside the CBD and within the CBD are free.
