Savage wilderness is giving adventure-seeking Kenyan families the chance to try out kayaking for free in a bid to increase local participation in the sport.

According to Anthony Kione, a sales executive at the adventure tourism company, they are trying to popularise adventure sports among locals.

“We would like to change the mentality that kayaking and other adventure sports is a mzungu thing so we decided to offer a free three hour course,” he said.

The three hour free course will take place at the Sagana camp and is open to children as young as eight years.

“This is our first free course and we are targeting beginners. One does not need prior kayaking experience and it will be done in still waters. Even if it is for beginners, the participant must at least know how to swim,” said Anthony.

Seeing that the course is fo beginners, it will teach basic skills in kayaking such as paddling, moving forward, moving backwards among others.

It should be noted that kayaking differs from white rafting in that the former is an individual sport while the latter is a group one.

“The two of them are water sports but the difference between them is the size of the vessel. A raft is way bigger and can take up to 6 pax in a boat while else a kayak is a one man boat,” said Anthony.

Those wishing to attend the course will not have to worry about equipment as it shall all be provided. The free course will take place on Saturday August 13, 2014.
