Electric-Shopping-Cart-JJS-SC06-One of Kenya’s largest supermarkets, Nakumatt, has re-introduced the use of motorized shopping carts that will enable their physically challenged customers to go on their purchase experience in the store without the help of a shop assistant.

“We have made significant investments to ensure that we provide a non-discriminatory shopping environment and will continue to do more in our quest to enhance the shopping experience in our branches for our customers,” said Mr. Neel Shah, the Nakumatt Holdings Head of Business Development during the re-launch at the newly opened Nakumatt NextGen on Mombasa Road, Nairobi.

In doing so, the company is abiding by the Section 21 of the persons with disabilities Act, 2003 which states that persons with disabilities are entitled to a barrier-free and disability-friendly environment to enable them to have access to buildings, roads and other social amenities, and assistive devices and other equipment to promote their mobility.

Other than the motorized shopping carts, which comprise a large shopping basket with an electric powered steering wheel, the store will add other mobility friendly services for persons with disabilities such as in store travelators, wide body lifts, access ramps and dedicated parking spaces.

Some of the Nairobi stores that shoppers will have access to the motorized shopping carts include; Nakumatt Galleria, Nakumatt NextGen, Nakumatt Prestige, Nakumatt Mega, Nakumatt TRM, Nakumatt Junction, Nakumatt Westgate and Nakumatt Village market.

In Mombasa; Nakumatt Nyali and Likoni shoppers will also have access to the motorized shopping carts. Others areas include: Eldoret (Nakumaat Eldoret) Nakuru (Nakumatt Nakuru) and Kisumu, (Nakumatt City).
