The Kenyan educational ministry has approved the new educational system 2-6-3-3-3 from 8-4-4 in a bid to promote children’s skills rather than put the previous system that put emphasis on exams.

It will include continuous assessment tests which will be taken during the various classes instead of the end of year exams and the national exams; KCPE and KCSE. Pupils and students will be evaluated from time to time in their various classes to determine their competences.

The system features two years of early childhood education, six years in primary school, three in junior high school, three in senior high school and three for higher education.

In the primary school level, it is divided into two; lower primary (three years), where pupils will be taught different languages, science, agricultural activities, social science and mathematics.

The other is upper primary (three years), where pupils will be taught languages including foreign ones, home economics, mathematics, technology, religious education , creative arts and physical education among others.

In the junior high school, students will initially be taught 12 subjects that include business studies, mathematics, religious education, life skills, sports, physical education, English, Kiswahili, agriculture, pre-vocational studies, health education and pre-technical studies.

In the senior high school level however, students will be need to choose specific subjects that relate to their career goals and with what they wish to study in higher education.

Higher education will take a minimum of three years and one’s subject choice will determine the institution they join.
